What Is March Madness?
March Madness is the annual NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Basketball Tournament, beginning in March and ending in April. It features 68 college teams competing to determine the national champion.
What Is The March Madness Bracket?
The March Madness bracket is the tournament layout used to track the progress of teams in the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Basketball Championships. It starts with 68 teams (after the "First Four" play-in games) and follows a single-elimination format until a champion is crowned.
How Does The Tournament Work?
- Teams Are Seeded –
The 68 teams are ranked and placed into four regions: East, West, South, and Midwest. Each region has teams seeded 1 through 16. - First Four –
Four games determine the last four spots in the 64-team field. - Round of 64 –
64 teams compete, with lower seeds facing higher seeds (e.g., #1 vs. #16, #2 vs. #15, etc.). - Round of 32 –
32 teams remain. - Sweet 16 –
The last 16 teams advance. - Elite Eight –
The final eight teams compete for a spot in the next round. - Final Four –
The last four teams (winners of each region) battle it out - National Championship –
The two Final Four winners compete for the title.
March Madness Bracket Challenges
Millions of viewers participate in bracket challenges every year. The goal is to predict who will win each game in the bracket, from the Round of 64, all the way to the National Championship. Depending on how many predictions you get correct, the more points you will earn.
Usually, the points for each correct pick increase throughout each round.
e.g. Round of 64 - 1 point, Round of 32 - 2 points etc.
This is to reward players who's picks progress further into the tournament.
Once the tournament is over, whoever has the most points will win.
The Perfect Bracket
A March Madness perfect bracket is a bracket where you correctly predict the outcome of every single game in the tournament, from the first round to the national championship. This means selecting the winning team for all 63 games (in a 64-team bracket, not counting the First Four). Essentially, it’s correctly guessing the result of every match-up.
Odds Of A Perfect March Madness Bracket
There are 9,223,372,036,854,775,808 different outcomes for the bracket.
Therefore, if someone guesses randomly (50-50 for each game), their odds of picking a perfect bracket are 1 in 9.2 quintillion.
However, with basketball knowledge and taking into consideration the seeds, experts estimate the odds improve to about 1 in 120 billion.
